The Glaciers, waterfalls and placid lakes add some more beauty to this tranquil valley. Situated at an altitude of 2740 m above sea level, at the foot of the Zojila pass, Sonamarg is the gateway to Ladakh. It is a perfect place for the excursionists. The Charming little town of Sonamarg has some stunning blue water lakes and rich in color grasslands. From Sonamarg, one can also look at the towering snow clad mountains of the Ladakh region that are a real treat to eyes. If this is not enough, Sonamarg has ample opportunities for adventure enthusiasts also. On one hand the Krishnasar Lake and Sindh River and frequented for trout fishing and Mahseer fishing respectively while on the other, all the frozen glaciers are perfect for sledging. Sonamarg is the main base for the treks that passes along several mountain lakes like the Vishansar, Kishansar, Gadsar, Satsar and Gangbal. Sonamarg is also the major point for the drive to Ladakh across the Zoji La Pass. Sonamarg is also a base for undertaking the yatra to the holy Amarnath Cave. The best time to visit is from April to June and September to November.
